Horror is a genre that allows you to safely explore fear in a way that can provide catharsis. Using this idea, I wanted to explore the difficult territory of teenage girlhood: a time in a young lady’s life where everything is truly horrifying. Like Astrid, my parents went through a traumatic divorce that shook up my life; just another thing that is out of your control. Add in the setting of the Northwoods of Wisconsin and you’ve got yourself a scary story.
I grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and spent many summers in those Northwoods. There’s a feeling at night that I can’t quite describe, but will attempt to: it’s nighttime and you go outside… the sky is clear and you can see more stars than you thought possible. It’s quiet here, and the thrum of the forest fills the night. You hear a loon’s shrieking call and realize you’re miles from another house. Something rustles in the woods telling you that you are not alone…
Walk Into the Dark and find out!
